bay bridge walk (05/2006)
If you look at a map of Maryland,
where I live, you will see that the Chesapeake Bay divides the state. Two
4-mile bridges span this estuary at one of the narrower points. On the
first Sunday in May, the authorities close one of the bridges to cars and
allow people to walk across, from the "Eastern Shore" (Queen Anne's County)
to the "Western Shore" (Anne Arundel County).
This year was the third time my family
and I have done the Bridge Walk. My aunt Waltraud, visting from Germany,
came along. It's a tough hike--the first two miles are uphill--and not
for those with a fear of heights, as the bridge rises hundreds of feet
above the water. It's an interesting sensation to look down on seagulls
flying and to feel the deck of the bridge tremble under the footsteps of
thousands of people. The weather was great--sunny and warm without being
hot--and the scenery was magnificent.
