isabel comes calling (september 2003)
As I post this, it's summertime, which means a lot of things--including hurricanes. Here in Maryland, we don't get many, but ever since Isabel washed into my neighborhood, I've been paying attention to what my good friends at NOAA have to say about them....

Beth (then 9 years old) and Ally (then 4) wake up and see what Isabel left us

Looking down my street at the storm surge from the Chesapeake Bay the morning after

Isabel didn't get my car, but my neighbor lost three when his garage flooded

How deep was the water? So deep that folks were rowboating around that brick house

Our cat Champy wants to know what's wrong with the yard

The water stopped about 20 feet from our back door, but our puppy, Cookie, didn't mind

I'm still not quite sure why we didn't lose the pool

How deep was the water in the backyard? So deep that my mother's Rottweiler went wading;
And Wilhelmina is NOT a small dog

Cookie, of course, thinks all this is great fun

Our dog Bogart does not agree;
Despite being a Labrador, Bo didn't like water. Go figure

Our house was one of the few on our street that didn't get flooded
