ladies' night out with the pittsburgh steelers (october, 2007)
If you've seen our photos from this page, you know that Joni and I are huge fans of the Pittsburgh Steelers football team. By accident, I happened to find out that the Steelers hold an annual "ladies' night out" that only women are allowed to attend. I also learned that this year, the Steelers would be honoring their 75th anniversary by naming 34 current and former players to their "All-Time" team, and that the ladies who attended this year's "night out" would also be invited to a press conference where the "All-Time" team would be announced.

This was a once-in-a-lifetime, black-and-golden opportunity that we could not miss. I bought Joni a ticket, she drove to Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, and on October 24, Joni spent the evening as a guest of the Steelers. Click on each thumbnail to see a larger version.

The event started with a prime-rib dinner, where Joni saw team president Art Rooney II

Owner Dan Rooney

The "All-Team" press conference, where current Steeler Hines Ward (center photo) and
the great L.C. Greenwood (right photo), a Steeler from the 1970's, were honored

Greenwood and Ward with the Rooneys, who have owned the team since it began in 1933
Joni later learned that L.C. didn't care much for Hines' pink shirt

The ladies also had two guest speakers, linebackers
James Harrison (above) and LaMarr Woodley

Then it was time for a tour of the stadium. Here are the field and the main scoreboard

Each lady was invited to try kicking a field goal, and Joni made it (see the ball going through the uprights?)
That's my woman!

Continuing the tour, Joni saw the shovel used to break ground for the stadium,
and a sign donated to the Steelers from the community

By custom, no one steps on either one, as a show of respect for the organization

More views from the glassed-in press box. During games, reporters are not allowed to talk

If all that wasn't enough, the ladies were invited to a taping of "The Hines Ward Show,"
a weekly TV show broadcast in Pittsburgh on KDKA, Channel 2

After changing for the show, Hines met the audience and shook Joni's hand
His guest for the night was his friend and fellow Steeler, Deshea Townsend

Hines and the m.c. Have I mentioned that Joni has a HUGE crush on Mr. Ward?
I refer to him as "Joni's Next Husband"

During the show, Hines talked about the upcoming November 5th game against
their rival, the Baltimore Ravens. Hines described relations between the
Steelers and the Ravens as "utter hatred." The Steelers crushed the Ravens, 38-7

Hines and Deshea talked about their long friendship (both are veterans on the team)
and how they room together every year at training camp. Hines says that Deshea's
most annoying habit is that he sleeps with the TV on, which keeps Hines up

Hines and Deshea answered questions from the audience. Joni got to ask Hines how he
avoids getting sick with all the airline travel does (the answer: vitamins). Hines likes to cook,
and the show (and "Ladies' Night Out") wrapped up with a cooking segment

Not only did Joni get to see her favorite Steeler, she got to touch his Super Bowl ring (if you recall, Ward was the Most Valuable Player of the game).

The food was great, the talks from Harrison and Woodley ("A Week in the Life of a Steeler") were fun and infomative (a lot of football player's time is spent in meetings), and the tour was way-cool. All the Steelers and everyone from the organization were friendly and very nice and were genuinely enthusiastic about being there: no one--not even big-time stars like Ward and Townsend--was stand-offish or snobbish. It was a great time, and Joni's still gushing about it.
