On the second day of our trip, we braved the nasty, cold, rainy weather and went to Versailles, a suburb of Paris, to see the palace there. Hours of walking can be rough on Ally-Jane's knees, so we brought along her wheelchair. Click on each thumbnail to see a larger version.

On our way to the Metro; outside the palace

Louis XIV, the "Sun King," who ordered the building of the palace;
The palace is so grand that even the front gates are made of gold

"All the glories of France"; inside the gates; a chapel right inside the entrance to the palace

Inside are many gorgeous paintings, including one of the palace and its grounds

I literally could not take enough photographs to show all the beautiful things at the palace;
what you see here is a tiny, tiny portion. Just imagine scores of rooms stuffed with treasures.

Gilded furniture, portraits of nobles (Ally-Jane liked this one for the little dog), and statues of kings and queens

Stone sarcophagi in a hall

I wonder how many sculptors, painters, and other artists were employed to decorate almost every inch of the palace,
how much gold was used, and how much it cost. Many of the ceilings are painted to depict Greek gods and goddesses.

Everywhere in the palace are statues, paintings (like this one of Marie Antoinette and her children), and beautiful furniture

Gold candelabras; a view from a window on the second floor; the king's council room

Unless you work at Ft. Knox, Versailles has more gold than you will probably see in your life

The queen's bed, decorated in gold brocade and ostrich feathers

The famous Hall of Mirrors, with painted ceiling, of course

The rear of the palace, leading out into the extensive gardens
