the gardens at versailles, 04/03/2010
On the second day of our trip, we braved the nasty, cold, rainy weather and went to Versailles, a suburb of Paris, to see the palace there. Hours of walking can be rough on Ally-Jane's knees, so we brought along her wheelchair. Click on each thumbnail to see a larger version.

The rear of the palace, with some of the fountains

Almost all that land you see behind us is part of the grounds;
detail of the "frogmen" coming out of the fountain behind us

Hedges and more fountains

Uber-cool "dragon" fountain!

The garden also has lots of statues...

...as well as side trails and hidden areas

The "Apollo Fountain." Impressive, eh?

Also on the grounds is a small palace, the Petit Trianon, that Marie Antoinette used to get away
from court life at the Palace of Versailles itself. Only she and her guests were allowed here.

Near the Petit Trianon is a "Chapel of Love" and "The Queen's Hamlet," an artificial "farm," where
Marie and her friends would LARP by dressing up as peasants and pretending to do chores

A quaint "cottage," and bunnies! Ally-Jane does love her some bunnies

The girls really liked the animals, especially the the sheep, the donkeys...

...and the hogs! Ally-Jane was awestruck at how large they are.

Strolling around, on our way out of the area of the Petit Trianon...

...and off to the Grand Trianon, used by the French kings when they tired of the Palace of Versailles

Just because it was the royal "get-away" doesn't mean it isn't, of course,
lavishly decorated. Louis XIV didn't "rough it." Not in the slightest.

Leaving the Grand Trianon, and Versailles.
Next up: back to Paris for the museums!
