shenandoah national park (cotober, 2008)
For our 20th wedding anniversary this year, Joni and I decided to take Ally and Beth and our dogs for a long weekend in Virginia's  Shenandoah National Park. It may sound odd that we wanted to bring along the kids and the dogs, but we actually--gasp!--like going places with the girls, and they didn't want to miss out on the fun. Taking the dogs along would meant that we wouldn't worry about them misbehaving for our neighbors, who are usually stuck taking care of our rotten dogs when we're away.

Admiring the views from Skyline Drive

Our beagle, Cecilia, catching the breeze; this sign was made with Joni in mind

Mary's Rock Tunnel, along Skyline Drive

Hiking in the woods near Dark Hollow Falls

The Big Meadow (yes, it's really called that), and the girls taking a breather in the woods

We stayed at the nearby Dove's Nest Chalet

Part of the downstairs at the Dove's Nest

Part of the upstairs. No, I didn't ask for that old-time dentist's chair to be there.

Tiki and Cecilia quickly got comfy

Luray Caverns is nearby, so we visited there. These two photos are of a natural pool
of water that perfectly reflects the stalactites growing down from the ceiling above it

We've been wanting to see Luray ever since we went to the "Lost Sea" caves last year
while visiting my Great Aunt Marliese and her family in Knoxville, Tennessee

Right outside the caverns is a hedge maze, where you try to find four stations...

...and the way out. Good luck with either of those.

At one end of the maze is an observation deck, so you can get your bearings, and a fountain

Joni and I competed as a team against Ally and Beth (as a team) to see who could visit
the four stations and reach the exit first. Along the way, we found some not-so-helpful signs

Even when they were helpful, I didn't trust them, much to my dismay

Needless to say, the girls won easily. The swine.

Also near Luray Caverns is the Luray Singing Tower, a carillon, which, by happy coincidence, was
playing as we went by. We stopped to listen, then went back to the chalet and took our dogs for
a walk. A local dog (her tags said her name was "Roxy") joined our dog Cookie for a romp

Some kind of lake monster? No, just Cookie swimming in a pond.
Yep, she's my Eastern Shore "wa'er dawg"

Toasting marshmallows in the fireplace at the chalet

The next day, back at Shenandoah Park, we were led by a friendly forest gnome up the trail
to Miller's Head, where we had a gorgeous view of the surrounding area

The dogs particularly enjoyed the trail, even if it was very rocky. We took lots of breaks

Most of Joni's friends and sisters think it was her idea to bring the kids along, but actually, I thought of it.

Really.
